Primary Care Frontline Of Mental Health
Primary care physicians are the front line of mental health, approximately 1/3 of their patients have a primary. As the “default provider” of mental health care, the insurance model of “drive through” primary care and prevention, the primary course of treatment is psychiatric medications. However, without the time or reimbursement for adequate medication management, primary care physicians are confronted with their clinical reach exceeds their grasp.
Traditional psychiatric care fragments the mind, body connection. The shortage of psychiatrist, compound by a “drive through” insurance model, reduces the practice of psychiatry to diagnostics and medication management. Lacking a comprehensive, integrated model of mental healthcare, that builds resiliency and fosters patient empowerment, undermines the objectives of primary preventative care. As a result, patients are far less likely to achieve or sustain, optimum, whole person health and the emotional wellness we are entitled too.
